I am worried about the future of jobs in the USA, not only for those currently in the employment market but also those who will be entering in the next 5-10+ years. It used to be that you felt that if you worked hard in school to get a good education that would lead to a well paying job with some longevity. The average worker today will have 7 job changes through his/her career. That is ok if there are jobs with which to change. However there has been a tremendous outsourcing and exporting of jobs, not only manual labor jobs but also white collar programming, customer service, and now even research and development.
This is all for the mighty dollar for companies to screw the workers that got them to a competitive position, then dump them for cheaper labor, benefitting only those at the top or stockholders. Noone seems to be concerned about the average person.
NAFTA was founded on the faulty premise that we would help other countries raise their standard of living so they could purchase our goods. However, we are rapidly losing any goods for them to purchase. Consequently, the only thing that is accomplished is lowering our standard of living. What happens when a worker with a family is laid off from a $50k-$100k job and has to find work for $10/hour? How does that help our economy and tax base? The USA has the largest middle class in the world, but it will continue to deteriorate as a result of these trade imbalance! Furthermore, you will continue to see people look for less expensive places to live since the cost of living continues to increase but salaries do not; even if that means leaving the US.
Is this important to you? What do you feel can be done about this? Let's hear from you!
