CARS GET 250 MPG!

Backyard mechanics have been able to retrofit existing hybrid technologies to get up to 250 mpg, by using innovative battery technologies and "plugging in" to precharge the batteries. These people were able to develop these cars using modest personal budgets and commercially available parts.

From the Associated Press:

CORTE MADERA, Calif. (AP) -- Politicians and automakers say a car that can both reduce greenhouse gases and free America from its reliance on foreign oil is years or even decades away. Ron Gremban says such a car is parked in his garage.

It looks like a typical Toyota Prius hybrid, but in the trunk sits an 80-miles-per-gallon secret - a stack of 18 brick-sized batteries that boosts the car's high mileage with an extra electrical charge so it can burn even less fuel.

Gremban, an electrical engineer and committed environmentalist, spent several months and $3,000 tinkering with his car.

The real question is, why can't Detroit develop or EMBRACE this innovation? The cold reality is presented in the final paragraphs:

Instead, Frank said, automakers promise hydrogen-powered vehicles hailed by President Bush and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, even though hydrogen's backers acknowledge the cars won't be widely available for years and would require a vast infrastructure of new fueling stations.

"They'd rather work on something that won't be in their lifetime, and that's this hydrogen economy stuff," Frank said. "They pick this kind of target to get the public off their back, essentially."

IMHO, the real reason behind the obvious anti-hybrid slant is that Bush and his oil baron buddies know full well that oil will be a dying business in the very near future. Their next energy monopoly: hydrogen gas stations. It would be way too easy for the American consumer to plug their car into a standard household outlet, that has power provided by a regulated industry. Instead, complex hydrogen distribution systems built on the infrastructure of the major refineries will be slowly rolled out, most likely with tax incentives paid for by the consumer and double-dipped with higher oil prices today.

Jackson Verdict , California Dreamin'!

Michael Jackson NOT GUILTY, that seems to be a common verdict in the California hi profile celebrity cases.

What is it with this DA office? It seems to me that before bringing theses cases to trial and wasting the taxpayers' money, the DA would make sure there was a case that they could win beyond a reasonable doubt.

Or, maybe the lawyers involved see it as a way to get in the spotlight, for their 15+ minutes of fame.

Living in the "Age of Anonymity"

Is America today, the America you heard about growing up? Is the American Dream still possible? Or, are we living in the Age of Anonymity, where every city is starting to look the same?

Chain stores have robbed America of Mom and Pop stores that used to dot the country. To me, these Mom and Pop stores, from hardware stores, grocery stores to restaurants and retail stores, are what made the American Dream. People in these stores used to know you by name. Conversely, today, you are lucky if you can find a live body for customer service. You are relatively anonymous in the retail environment, relegated to a number.

Furthermore, the local stores that these chains have put out of business, forced the former owners to take hourly wage jobs. Stores that took generations to build, supporting multiple generations wiped out by a Big Box store, who will leave the town at the drop of a hat.

Is this progress? What do you think, Speak the TruthUSA!

Energy and Bush's Legacy

Why is the most powerful country on Earth still being held captive by foreign countries with regard to natural resources, specifically oil? It seems to me that we should be able to develop our own natural or synthetic substitute. The car has been around for almost 100 years!

We have sent a man to the Moon but we haven't weened ourselves from foreign oil. Something is wrong with this picture. Could it be that big business doesn't want this to happen?

Speaking of sending a man to the Moon. JFK's legacy was the prioritization of exploring space. A terrific legacy for Bush would be to free us from the shackles of foreign oil, and to challenge companies to come up with a viable alternative fuel source, whether it comes from crops or fuel cells.

Tell the Truth! What do you think and how can we accomplish this?

VALUES in America

Is it just me? In the process of getting older, approaching 50 sooner than I would like, and being in the teaching field, major observations that I have made include that today's young people and even American citizens in general do not display the American values that were the cornerstone for which I thought American stood. Such values included Hard Work, Treat others With Respect, Respect Your Elders, and others.

As a result, America is not perceived well overseas, and within America there is the proliferation of a culture that pours money into Get Rich Quick schemes, Credit Cards maxed to the hilt, kids listening to music and watching videos that promote pimps, HOS, Bitches, and every 4 letter word under the sun! Top corporate executives think nothing of financially raping their employees as long as they have a golden parachute.

Nowhere do I hear a voice promoting in the Media and in Education, the type of Core Beliefs and Values that America and Americans should have.

What do you think? Post your thoughts.

The Future of Jobs in the USA

I am worried about the future of jobs in the USA, not only for those currently in the employment market but also those who will be entering in the next 5-10+ years. It used to be that you felt that if you worked hard in school to get a good education that would lead to a well paying job with some longevity. The average worker today will have 7 job changes through his/her career. That is ok if there are jobs with which to change. However there has been a tremendous outsourcing and exporting of jobs, not only manual labor jobs but also white collar programming, customer service, and now even research and development.

This is all for the mighty dollar for companies to screw the workers that got them to a competitive position, then dump them for cheaper labor, benefitting only those at the top or stockholders. Noone seems to be concerned about the average person.

NAFTA was founded on the faulty premise that we would help other countries raise their standard of living so they could purchase our goods. However, we are rapidly losing any goods for them to purchase. Consequently, the only thing that is accomplished is lowering our standard of living. What happens when a worker with a family is laid off from a $50k-$100k job and has to find work for $10/hour? How does that help our economy and tax base? The USA has the largest middle class in the world, but it will continue to deteriorate as a result of these trade imbalance! Furthermore, you will continue to see people look for less expensive places to live since the cost of living continues to increase but salaries do not; even if that means leaving the US.

Is this important to you? What do you feel can be done about this? Let's hear from you!

Education: Today's Young Students

Education:

The No Child Left Behind Act.

In dealing with today's students, it is very important that all students strive to be the best, that we as educators have set high expectations for our young people, and that the school and teachers are held accountable for presenting rich material.

All students have the right to a rich curriculum taught by competent teachers.

However, there are certain prerequisites that students and their parents need to understand.

It is not any student's right to interfere with another student's learning. Parents are responsible for teaching their children manners and respect for others, not the schools. Parents are responsible for providing a quiet spot for their children to do their homework, and to have consequences for their children's compliance and behavior, not the school.

We have plenty of fantastic young people in our schools. Contrary to popular beliefs, their success is not dependent on their socioeconomic status. But it is a function of caring parents who monitor and guide their children. That includes prioritizing education, not other activities that get in the way.

How can we hold students and parents accountable if they do not hold up their part of education?
